Thomas Carlyle Ford is an American fashion designer and film director, who gained international fame for his turnaround of the Gucci fashion house and the creation of the Tom Ford label. Ford was born on August 27, 1961 in Austin, Texas, to realtors Tom Ford and Shirley Burton.

Relocating to New York City

Ford relocated to New York City to study at Parsons The New School for Design, concentrating on interior architecture. During this time Ford took the opportunity to spend six months in Paris working as an intern at Chloé's press office, which triggered his love of fashion. When returning to The New School to finish his last year he studied fashion, however he graduated with a degree in architecture.

Having developed a passion for fashion Ford took the initiative to carefully word his previous experiences in the industry to help get himself a job in the industry once he had graduated. Ford highlighted that he'd attended The New School's Parsons, but concealed that he'd graduated in Architecture. As he also emphasised that he'd worked for Chloé, but didn't stress the fact that the job was a public relations internship.
