In Rome, official licensed taxis are white and can be identified by the ‘taxi’ sign on the roof as well as a ‘Comune di Roma’ sign on the door. Unlicensed drivers can be seen inside airports and train stations hawking their services to unscrupulous new arrivals, but legitimate, licensed taxi drivers do not leave their vehicles or call out to potential customers. They can be found at official taxi stands or reserved via telephone.
Taxi stands are located throughout Rome’s city center, near hospitals, in front of train stations and outside Rome’s Fiumicino (also known as Leonardo da Vinci) and Ciampino airports. A list of standard fares and supplements in English should hang behind the front seat of every Roman taxi, and all taxis should have a meter that is clearly visible from the back seat. Upon request, a receipt (scontrino) can be provided by the driver. Tipping of taxi drivers in Rome is not mandatory but always appreciated.
