The Spring 2011 exhibition at London's Royal Academy of Arts is entitled Watteau: The Drawings. As its title implies the show features the drawings of Jean-Antoine Watteau.

Jean-Antoine Watteau

Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was born in Valenciennes, in 1684, and after initially being apprenticed to various obscure painters, he took up residence in Paris where he worked as a copyist in the workshop of Etienne Desrais. He was eventually spotted by Claude Gillot with whom he trained from 1705-08, subsequently obtaining a position with Claude Audran, Keeper of the Palais du Luxenbourg. Watteau found his inspiration in the works of artists such as Rubens and Van Dyck, and in turn influenced many generations of artists including François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard.
