In the United Kingdom, manual transmission (or stick shift) cars are the norm. Unlike North America, in the UK, affordable automatic transmission cars have been, for many years, primarily reserved for learners in the early stages of their lessons - before they graduate onto a manual car - disabled drivers and the elderly. Those holding a manual licence may drive automatics without further testing, however, anyone who has passed their test in an automatic car will have to re-take both theory and practical tests in order to qualify to drive a manual or stick shift transmission car.

Many top-of-the-range models offer the choice of an automatic or tiptronic (semi-automatic) option as standard, but it has taken many years for mid-range and city cars, those with engines 1.0 litre to 1.4 litre engines, to be widely available in both forms. Even now, those restricted to automatic use by preference or driving licence will find that automatics cost more to buy or hire, and may even cost more to insure.

This can make hiring a car a daunting and expensive prospect; however, it does occasionally have to be done.
