Designing your own printable invitations is an efficient and cost-effective way to personalize your cards. Be imaginative by framing the cards with ribbons, writing event information in calligraphy, or using special scissors or shaped hole-punchers to create a decorative edge along the cards. Using a word processing program, you can easily design printable invitations in no time.
- Open a word processing program. Word processing programs are versatile in that they allow you to create written reports as well as a variety of cards, such as invitation, greeting or thank you cards.
- Click on the "insert" tab, which is located on the top left corner of the screen. This tab offers a selection of image and text inserts that may be appropriate for invitations, such as clip art, shapes and word art.
- Click on the appropriate link to begin designing the invitations, such as "clip art," "text box," or "word art." Clip art allows you to insert images, while text box inserts a decorative box surrounding the text and word art alters the style of the text. Selecting "clip art" will produce a menu on the right side of the document for you to choose which images to insert. Double clicking on an image will insert it into the document. Once the image appears in the document, a format menu option will appear above the document.
- Add a decorative border around the image by clicking on a border selection from the format menu. On the right side of the format tool, you are given the option of altering the border's color or adding a special effect to the image, such as a 3D or reflection effect. Simply click on "picture border," "picture shape" or "picture effect" to choose another shape, color or effect for the image.
- Adjust the brightness or contrast of the image by first selecting the image you wish to alter and clicking on the "brightness" or "contrast" link on the top left corner of the format tab.
- Crop the image to remove unnecessary space by clicking the "crop" link on the top right corner of the format tab. This will form dotted lines around the image. Place the arrow on any of the dotted lines and drag inward to crop the image. Repeat step 1-5 to insert "pictures," "shapes" or "smart art." Smart art organizes your personal photos into groups and allows you to incorporate text into the image.
- Alter the size or location of the image or text by first highlighting and then dragging it to another location. The size may be altered by dragging any one of the four corners either inward or outward once it has been highlighted. If you've made a mistake with an image, take a step back by clicking on "reset picture" which is located on the top left corner of the format tab.
- Insert text into the invitation by simply typing a message directly onto the document.
- Create a decorative box around the text by clicking on the "text box" link and choosing the appropriate box. Type directly onto the box for the text to appear.
- Highlight the text to alter the font style, size, shape and color. Click on the "word art" link to choose from a selection of word art. Once you've made a selection, you will be prompted to choose the size and font of the text before the word art will be applied.
- Print out the invitations once the design is complete. Accessorize the card with adornments such as beads, sequins, glitter or ribbons. This step is optional and depends on your personal taste as well as the event. If you plan to mail the card, you may want to refrain from adding too many adornments as they may become loose during transportation. Handwrite special notes or messages to each recipient if you decided to skip the text options and would prefer calligraphy.
